Ngāti Maru Deed of Settlement – Te Hiringa Taketake

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Maru, through the Negotiations Team, has been negotiating with the Crown since 2016 in relation to the settlement of the historical claims of Ngāti Maru. With the initialling of the Deed of Settlement in August 2020, the members of Ngāti Maru now have the opportunity to vote on whether to accept the proposed Deed of Settlement.

We, the Trustees of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Maru and the Negotiations Team, strongly recommend that Ngāti Maru members vote to accept the proposed Deed of Settlement.

Adult Registered Members will be contacted by independent voting company called electionz.com shortly. You will be able to vote by post, online and by Ballot Box at the Ratification Information Hui.

Five Ratification Information Hui will be held across the North Island from 21 – 26 September 2020. We hope to live stream each hui so whānau can attend virtually.

The key components of the Deed of Settlement are:

• Historical Account, Crown Acknowledgments of Treaty breaches and Crown Apology for those breaches
• Cultural Redress: the return of ancestral lands and the acknowledgement of connections to sites of cultural or historical significance; and relationships with Crown agencies
• Financial and Commercial Redress

What Resolution are Adult Registered Members asked to vote on.

I, as a member of Ngāti Maru, agree:

  • to accept the Ngāti Maru Deed of Settlement, Te Hiringa Taketake.
  • that Holden Hohaia, Tamzyn Pue, Bronwyn Koroheke, Eileen Hall, Raymond Tuuta, Sam Tamarapa, Anaru Marshall, Nathan Peri, Prescilla Paretutaki Hayward-Howie, Jamie Tuuta, and Rowena Henry sign the Deed of Settlement on behalf of Ngāti Maru.

Who is eligible to vote?

All registered adult members of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Maru (aged 18 years and over) are eligible to vote.
Registered members who turn 18 years old during this voting period can also vote.

Who runs the voting process?

The voting process will be run by an independent voting company called electionz.com. It is not run by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Maru.
